Pre-Festival: Free Screenings on the Piazza Grande - 4 and 6 August
The Festival del film Locarno once again offers two free evenings on the Piazza Grande, as a foretaste of its 66th edition. In order to provide the population of Locarno and its guests the opportunity to enjoy the Piazza Grande experience, the Festival will present on Sunday 4 and Tuesday 6 August two outstanding film classics.
The first Pre-Festival evening, on Sunday, 4 August, highlights Italian cinema: the Piazza Grande’s giant screen will unspool Vittorio De Sica’s masterpiece The Garden of the Finzi Continis (Italy, 1970). The film, winner of the Oscar for Best Foreign Film, stars Dominique Sanda and Lino Capolicchio. For the occasion, the film’s producer Arthur Cohn and protagonist Lino Capolicchio will be in Locarno to introduce it. The Garden of the Finzi Continis will be screened in its original Italian version with English subtitles. The evening is supported by Top Events of Switzerland and the Leopard Club.
The second evening, Tuesday, 6 August, turns to Hollywood, with an American classic starring Faye Dunaway and Jack Nicholson: Roman Polanski’s Chinatown (USA, 1974). This film noir, that won an Oscar and was nominated for ten other Academy Awards (including those for Best Actor and Actress), will screen with a new print with Italian subtitles. The Pre-Festival’s second evening is made possible through the support of UBS.
Faye Dunaway will also be a guest of honor at the Festival, where she will receive the Leopard Club Award: on Friday 9 August, in addition to the awards ceremony on the Piazza Grande, the actress will hold a conversation with the Festival audience, open to all, and moderated by the Artistic Director Carlo Chatrian at 10:30 at the Spazio Cinema (Forum).
The 66th edition of the Festival del film Locarno will be inaugurated on Wednesday 7 August with the opening ceremony, at 21:30 on the Piazza Grande, followed by a screening of the film 2 Guns directed by Baltasar Kormákur.
